Driftwood can be purchased at many pet stores, and can be used as a centerpiece for the terrarium. The order Squamata includes the lizards (suborder Sauria) and snakes (suborder Serpentes). The snapping turtle is currently listed as Special Concern under the Ontario Endangered Species Act, 2007 and Special Concern under the federal Species at Risk Act. A gecko in the home is considered good luck in Hawaii. Most amphibians are nocturnal, and all have moist skin. Like birds, male tuataras transfer sperm to the female while their cloaca (an opening through which feces is expelled, and through which reproduction occurs) are pressed together. Poison-dart frogs are so named because South American Indians used their poison to tip blowpipe darts. This frog face picture was drawn from a snapshot I captured of a green frog sitting in the sunshine by our garden pond. It killed land animals when they came to drink by (like you may see crocodiles do) having their eyes just above the water.

In contrast, diurnal lizards absorb heat by basking in the sun. However, they don’t have any claws or nails. However, careful examination of the fossils of early amphibians such as Ichthyostega and Acanthostega has revealed the presence of up to 8 toes on each foot! Adult vertebrates have a spinal column, or backbone, running the length of the body; invertebrates do not. They are non-venomous, so they are not dangerous to handle.
